Foundation Information

Two charters have been used for evidence that two women in the tenth century were attached to the Old Minster at Winchester as vowesses. Foot notes that they may be better classed as single vowesses living on their own estate.

Admin. Notes

This is one of those instances of evidence for religious women that is not a "community" per se and therefore its inclusion here is questionable. RR

Contributors Notes

In Veiled Women, vol. 1, Foot describes a class of women who lived as religious on their own estates which would either then revert to the family on their deaths or be donated to a monastic community. Sometimes these women would be attached to a community of monks (as suggested above) or nuns. At other times they had no clear communal attachment.
