The hospital was founded for lepers & poor and was administered by a master & several brothers & sisters in numbers equal to the lepers. Traditionally the foundation date is set during the age of king Richard I. Walter de Riboff, benefactor, is considered by some to be the founder.

Royal protection granted by king Edward II, 1312. Walter de Riboff was a benefactor as was Pope Gregory IX. Members [?} canonized received legacies, 1233. King Edward II granted the hospital the privilege to seek alms for 1 year in 1312; this was renewed in 1320.

The hospital had land holding; bread; ale; tithes on mills, other income came from the donation of the founder.

Income was derived from rents, the [production?] of food, legacies of members and by papal privilege in 1233. Alms and royal privileges helped support the community in the early 14th century.
