This convent of Cistercian nuns was founded circa 1268 by the Ritter family of Buches, who created the convent as a family burial place. The community was supported by the male Cistercian house of Arnsburg near Lich.

 
State Of Medieval Structure
 

In 1622 the medieval buildings were damaged by fire. In 1636 the nuns returned and from 1666-1750 rebuilding took place.

The Hessisches Staatsarchiv in Darmstadt contains the convent necrology, circa 1290, #261. The German National Museum in N├╝rnberg also contains a fragment of the necrology, circa 1290, # 34016.

In 1803 the convent was dissolved; it fell to various private owners. In 1962 the convent was reestablished by twenty Benedictine nuns from the abbey of Hiligen Kreuz near the Weser. In 1965 it was raised to an abbey; it currently belongs to the Beuroner Benedictine Congregation.
