The convent was founded for Benedictine nuns by the bishop of Paderborn, Bernhard IV (1227-1247). Circa 1380 the convent was destroyed and abandoned. In 1429 it was reestablished with Augustinian men and in 1803 it was finally dissolved. According to Kramer, this was a community of Augustinian women from circa 1264-1369 and a community of Augustinian canons from 1452-1803.
The archives are in the Staatarchiv in Münster. The majority of remaining literary works appear to correspond to the community's period as a house for Augustinian canons,i.e. most date to the fifteenth century. These literary works are preserved in the Staatsbibliothek Preußischer Kulturbesitz, in the University library in Bonn and in the Bistumsarchiv in Trier.
