Historical Context

This responsorial was created after the convent's internal reform in 1469. According to Uhde-Stahl, the late date of the manuscript (after 1476) but the iconographically earlier images indicates that the manuscript may have been produced by older nuns who adhered to older artistic styles (Uhde-Stahl, 50). See Figürliche Buchmalereien in den spätmittelalterlichen Handschriften der Lüneburger Frauenklöster.

Descriptive Notes

This illumination of the Arisen Christ does not include the typical figures of the guards or angels. Perhaps the image was unfinished. Christ's wounds are portrayed by red dots of pigment, and Christ holds a staff with a cross on top. This illumination is found in the context of Easter responses. The text to the side reads: "Great and exalted is this day" (Hic est dies magnus et praeclarus). The figure at top left holds a banner that repeats the word, Alleluia.
