Historical Context

This painting provides a visual documentation of the dedication of the west wing at Wienhausen, portraying in particular the "patrons" of this new structure, Abbess Margareta von Schöningen (circa 1302-1317) and Provost Dietrich von Prome. It is one of the few images within the convent to portray an abbess.

Descriptive Notes

In this painted dedication of the new west wing of the convent of Wienhausen, Abbess Margareta von Schöningen (circa 1302-1317) and Provost Dietrich von Prome flank the new building (on the left and right of the image respectively). Each figure appears with their hands lifted in prayer. On the left-hand side of the image, next to the abbess appears the founder of the community, Duchess Agnes of Landsberg. She is portrayed lifting a church (symbolizing Wienhausen) in offering to the Virgin Mary and Christ child, who appear at the top right of the painting. Mary is seated in a large throne. At top left is Saint Alexander, one of the patron saints of the community. The new west wing, built in the Gothic brick style with a step-facade, is depicted in very realistic detail. See Wienhausen, western range (south facade) and Wienhausen, western range The location of this painting, i.e. next to the entrance of the former winter refectory of the nuns, would have ensured that the nuns passed by it frequently and viewed it, thereby keeping the memory of this dedication alive in the collective memory of the community.
