Historical Context

This devotional image (Andachtsbild) was discovered beneath the floorboards of the nuns' choir in Wienhausen in 1953. The image depicts the convent's statue of the Arisen Christ as it originally would have appeared, i.e. wearing a crown and holding a bannder, surrounded by angels on either side. The image remained in use for several years within the community, as evidenced by re-touching of the illumination on the sarcophagus, which was done approximately two-hundred years later than the original painting. The figure is surrounded entirely by prayers and hymns, including the Easter hymn, "Salve paschalis regnator," displaying the important unity of text and image in medieval devotional practices.
