Historical Context

The Cloister is three stories high, with twenty-six columns on each side, making it one of the largest cloisters in the world. The main level of the cloister was built in the fourteenth century, the second level was added in 1419, and the third later in the fifteenth century. The cloister garden was probably used to grow both medicinal plants and flowers that the nuns used to make bouquets for the celebration of holy days in Barcelona: roses, orange flowers and jasmine, among others. The monastery was declared a national historic and artistic monument in 1931. The ajuntament of Barcelona purchased the cloister from the nuns in 1972, building them a new cloister nearby, and converting the old cloister into a museum.
