Historical Context

Few details of the building history survive. Presumably, the building first began as early as 959 but the date of its consecration is unknown. Under abbess Hedwig III (1118-1152) the western portion of the church was rebuilt. At this time the outer cloister was completed. The church is a three-naved basilica with a short transept. The eastern portion of the church is the oldest and remains largely original.
