Historical Context

This manuscript was created following the community's internal reform and a revival in spiritual devotion and instruction. This page of musical instruction teaches the tonal intervals, or the "do-re-mi" of singing. The image at the bottom of the page depicts a hortus conclusus, or enclosed garden, where two students in secular dress relax under the supervision of two nuns, depicted in brown habits and with three red crosses on their veils.
