Shaftesbury abbey, in Dorset, was founded by King Alfred the Great in the early 880s. The abbey prospered in the tenth century under the patronage of the West Saxon nobility, and became one of the wealthiest nunneries in the country. This edition of the pre-Conquest charters of Shaftesbury abbey comprises the texts of 30 documents, including 1 from the eighth century, 6 from the ninth century, 21 from the tenth century, and 2 from the eleventh century.
