The hospital was founded for 13 poor men, especially those of the Mercer's Company or clerks of Whittington College, upon which the hospital was a dependency. The hospital was founded by the estate of Richard Whittington, Lord Mayor of London.

Miscellaneous Information
 

The hospital survived up through the Reformation and continued to serve the poor well into the nineteenth-century when a new hospital was built on the site in 1848 to treat small pox. There is still currently a hospital at the site.
