Santa Maria in Foligno was one of two hospitals founded in the early fourteenth century by Ranuccio di Francesco, a brother of the Third Order of Penitence of St. Francis. The other hospital was S. Pietro in Colfiorito.

Men and women served these hospitals. The women were designated as belonging to the Order of Pentitents of St. Francis, the Order of Chaste Persons (Continentium) of St. Francis, women of the "fraternitas" of the Order of Penitents and women of the "fraternitas Continentium."
