Foundation Information

The earliest mention of this community appears in 1193.
Founded by Angelica Tencari, a hermitess, and originally associated with the canons of S. Maria di Reno. Angelica breaks with the canons by 1210. After Angelica's death, there was a transfer of nuns from SS. Trinità di Ronzano in 1247, who followed the rule of S. Mark of Mantua. S. Mattia was founded in 1254 and retained S. Maria del Monte della Guardia as a rural oratory. It was given Augustinian rule in 1249, was associated with Dominicans by 1278, and formally incorporated into the Dominican Order in 1496.
