This was the first church of the Poor Ladies of Clare, the order attributed to St. Clare of Assisi. The monastery was the first community Francis of Assisi founded when attempted to develop his Franciscan Order. It is said he chose this building to found his Order upon when the Lord spoke to him, asking him to restore the house of worship.
