According to legend the community was destroyed and later refounded at Hinchingbroke in 1087. According to tradition the community was founded by William I. Thompson dates the earlier site at Eltisleyto 1186 or 1190. She also lists Roger de Cundy as a possible founder (Women Religious: The Founding of English Nunneries After the Norman Conquest, 223).
