Exeter was originally founded as two houses, one of monks and one of nuns, and it is uncertain whether nuns' house was at Exeter.
NULL may have been the abbess of Exeter. Her identity and the identity of the house she ruled remain uncertain, however.
According to William of Malmesbury, a community of women at Exeter was ejected from the church of St. Peter. While there are other mentions of religious women, particularly an abbess Eadgifu, this is the only early mention directly related to a community of women at Exeter. Leland and others depend generally depend on Malmesbury's account.
