The founder of this community of Augustinian canonesses is unknown.
Mechtild of Edelstetten (d. 1160). Mechtild was a Bavarian, a daugter of the count and countess of Andechs. She was originally given to the double monastery of Diessen at five years old. She later became a nun and abbess there. When she was 28 years old, she was asked to reform the convent of Edelstetten, which she did after some initial resistance. She was known for her ability to miraculously heal and her ecstacies, which appear to have won the reluctant women of this community over to her reform. She had a premonition of her own death and returned to Diessen, where she died at the age of 35.
All the buildings are still extant. The church functions as a parish church today.
